~Trigger warning: This post contains possible trigger topics of someone with an eat disorder. If you would like to talk, I'm always here~
Because apparently this needs to be said.
Everyone with an eating disorder wants to die.
No, dear. Not everyone with an eating disorder is suicidal, contrary of what the priest said at this Sundays mass, which I forced to attend.
Lets put religion aside, yes?
Someone with an eating disorder is not starving or purging because of a death wish, sometimes yes, but in most cases, no. If someone has an eating disorder, that doesn't mean they want to die, in most cases, the exact opposite.
People with eating disorders think what they are doing is making them beautiful.
This one is a statement from my science teacher "they think its making them beautiful ,when it really makes them scary looking" First of all, completely unprofessional. That statement could be possibly triggering from someone.
No. Most, if not all, people with an eating disorder don't think of themselves as beautiful. It certainly doesn't make them look "scary". Everyone, with an eating disorder or not, is beautiful.
Its the medias fault, really. Anyone grown up in this time period thinks of beautiful as "skinny". If someone thinks not eating is making them beautiful, its not their fault. Some people know they shouldn't. People can't help it.
Bulimia and Anorexia are the only eating disorders.
No, Bulimia Nervosa and Anorexia are by far the most known, but not the only types of Eating Disorders. Binge Eating, Anorexia Athletica, Over exercise, Overeating, Night Eating Syndrome, Orthorexia Nervosa, and eating disorders otherwise not specified. To learn more about these eating disorders, go here.
Eating Disorders are physical illnesses. (Or Eating Disorders are mental illnesses).
It took me a while to answer this one.
This question has been much debated before. ED's are classified as both mental and physical illnesses, and in my opinion they should be. They have both physical and mental results and symptoms.
People with eating disorders can eat normally when ever they want, they just don't too.
False. Telling someone with an eating disorder to eat, is like telling someone with a broken leg to just walk.
Plus, after a while, you lose your appetite.
Only Females have eating disorders.
No, both females and males can have eating disorders. I have an upcoming post about female/male stereotypes coming soon..
***These are some, but not all common misconceptions on eating disorders. I'm not expect, so all information above may not be completely true. Again, I'm always here to talk. I do not support eating disorders at all***
